چکیده
Atoms of the radon daughters immediately after the radioactive decay of radon atoms have tendency to attach to condensation nuclei producing radioactive aerosols. Aerosols of size below 10 nm, composed of unattached ions or neutral atoms and molecular clusters associated with radon progeny atoms, are traditionally called unattached fraction. Aerosols above 10 nm up to greater than 1000 nm, with a predominant size between 50 and 500 nm, are called attached fraction. It is estimated that equivalent dose to the lung from radon gas is only about one hundredth of that from its short-lived daughters which constitute the main health hazard to the human respiratory tract in the radon environment. The effective dose, a measure of this hazard, is calculated as a product of the potential alpha energy concentration (PAEC) in the air and a dose conversion factor (DCF) or dose per unit intake. There are two approaches to the estimation of DCF. One of them, recommended by the International Radiation Protection Committee Publication 65 [5] introduces Studies of the radon progeny particle size distributions in the domestic environment. Calculating CR-39 Response to Radon in Water Using Monte Carlo Simulation
Introduction CR-39 detectors are widely used for Radon and progeny measurement in the air. In this paper, using the Monte Carlo simulation, the possibility of using the CR-39 for direct measurement of Radon and progeny in water is investigated. Materials and Methods Assuming the random position and angle of alpha particle emitted by Radon and progeny, alpha energy and angular spectrum that arri...

Domestic radon risk estimates are typically based either on data for uranium miners or on data derived from A-bomb survivors; comparison of domestic radon risk estimates derived from these two disparate sources represents an important test of their reliability. There is currently a significant discrepancy of about a factor of three between domestic radon risk estimates generated with these two ...
متن کاملComparison of Radon (222Rn) and Thoron (220Rn) Gamma Dosimetry in the Environment Using the ORNL Mathematical Phantom
Background: The potential hazards of exposure to radiation from radon have been of great concern worldwide, as it is associated with an increased risk of lung cancer. Radon (222Rn) and its progeny are the main sources of radioactivity in the environment. The half-life of 222Rn (3.82 days) is long enough for it to diffuse into and build up in homes. 220Rn or thoron from the 232Th series, and 219...
متن کاملMeasurement of inhalation dose due to radon and its progeny in an oil refinery and its dwellings .
Background: Radon, an invisible, odorless, heaviest (nine times heavier than air) and radioactive gas is an aberration (the only gas in the long decay chain of heavy metal elements). It is ubiquitously present in dwellings and in the environment. Humans receive the greatest radiation dose in their homes. That's where they spend most time - typically 70%, more for small children. Recent worldwid...

Background: Radon and thoron are invisible, odorless, heavy and radioactive gases which are ubiquitously present in dwellings and in the environment. In the present work, seasonal variation of indoor radon, thoron and their progeny concentrations has been studied in the dwellings of industrially polluted cities in District Faridabad, Haryana and District Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. Materials and ...
